主人公・幸(さち)は、木綿の産地摂津国（現大阪北中部あたり）の生まれ。元武士で商人を毛嫌いする父に育てられます。兄と父が急死、母と妹・結を残し、大坂天満(おおさかてんま)の呉服屋「五鈴屋（いすずや）」に女中奉公に入ります。「商いは邪道」と教えられていた幸ですが、五鈴屋の商いを目の当たりにし、その面白さに心を奪われます。幸の商才に気付いたのが三男・智蔵と番頭の治兵衛(じへえ)、先々代（二代目）の御寮さんの富久(ふく)でした。五鈴屋は、古手の行商から商いをはじめ、二代目の時に大坂天満に呉服を扱う店を構えました。しかし、三代目夫婦が早逝、商売を継いだ四代目・徳兵衛(とくべえ)は、商いに身が入らず、放蕩の限りを尽くしていました。傾きかけた店を立て直すため、四代目徳兵衛に船場の大店から嫁・菊栄を迎えますが、徳兵衛の放蕩は結局収まらず、数年で離婚。すでに、悪評の...。SYNOPSIS Urgently called, the police inspector has arrived in a hotel, and didn't find any crime, but noticed some strangenesses occurring there. (Strugatsky Brothers website) NOTES This is a crime / mystery thriller with surreal and psychedelic science fiction overtones based on a book Inspector Glebsky's Puzzle by the Strugatsky brothers. The screenplay was also written by the brothers and it differs from the book. The less you know about the movie the better starting point you have. The film is based largely on the mystery of what's happening to the people of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel. Is everything what it seems? Who's dead or who's not?。
